Boomerang (2016 TV channel)

Boomerang is an American 24-hour cable and satellite network owned by Turner Broadcasting System. The network launched on May 2, 2016, replacing the former network of the same name (which too originated as a spin-off of the same name block on Cartoon Network).

History

When Boomerang relaunched on January 19, 2015, many viewers and fans of the channel were disappointed with the new look and program format, thus lowering the ratings of the channel significantly, giving Boomerang only 9 million households left. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had announced that it would remove the mainstream Boomerang channel from television broadcast, but at a meeting with the Turner Broadcasting System on November 2, 2015, Turner expressed concern that shutting down the channel would mean the overcrowding of content when the programs moved to Cartoon Network.

To combat that, Turner announced that it would launch a new version of Boomerang that mirrors the original, but would still add some contemporary animated programs. The FCC approved the application for the channel on December 12, 2015, giving Turner a 12-year open window to launch it. The new Boomerang channel launched on May 2, 2016 as a joint venture between Turner Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation.
