Chemical Asphyxiation are an American thrash metal band formed in 1982 by brothers Chuck Griffith and Neil Griffith; along with original band members Nick Martinez, Rob Crete, and Chris Nathan. Chuck and Chris Nathan are the only current original members as of 2010, with Neil departed to form his own band in 1995; and Martinez and Crete leaving after the band's third album Chemical Warfare in 1987.
Following their formation in 1982 the band released two landmark albums between then and 1986; Crushed Into Submission and Pure Evil in 1984. They continued to play into the 90's and released several more albums; but were generally overshadowed by bigger bands. Their latest album, Armed To The Teeth was released in 2010 to wide acclaim and sales; and the band have been touring since.
Chuck Griffith had been playing guitar in several local Chicago bands throughout the late 70s-early 80s, but decided to join up with his brother Neil, who had just left college, and form their own band together. They contacted a friend, Chris Nathan, who agreed to play drums for the band and see if he liked it. He then recommended another guitarist in Nick Martinez, who joined officially in 1982, along with bassist Rob Crete. The band chose their name shortly after and began to perform together.
First album and reactionEdit
Finding themselves a local studio that charged cheaply, the band set themselves up in early April of 1982 to record their first album. As his father was a producer, Chris Nathan took what he had learnt and decided to produce the album for the band, despite his limited knowledge. His father Steven was eventually bought in around June to help the band record their material. Nathan reportedly had trouble finding the right drum sound and decided to buy a new kit with better quality, which only stunted the progress further. Chuck Griffith also had throat problems and his brother Neil was anticipated to having to take on vocals, but Chuck had recovered by July, at which time Steven had helped the band fully finish the record.
Crushed Into Submission was released on September 17th 1982 on MetalMagnet Records; a low profile and local label to produce music for several local Chicago bands. Following a few shows to promote the album, the band were contacted by an A&R representative from K.I.L.L Records and offered a five album deal; which the band took with eager anticipation.
Pure Evil and touringEdit
Following their contract to K.I.L.L Records in 1982, the band relocated to New York in 1983 to work with new producer Mitchell Christiansen.
