Cole Ortiz is a field agent with the Counter Terrorist Unit.

He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Frederick and Kathy Ortiz. At 17, Ortiz graduated from high school and went on to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Penn with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps via the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. While at Penn, Ortiz decided to become an infantry officer.

After The Basic School, he went on to the Infantry Officer Course. Upon completing the course, Ortiz was assigned as a rifle platoon commander to 2nd Battalion 8th Marines. After serving as a weapons platoon commander, he attended the Basic Reconnaissance Course and then the Marine Corps Combatant Diver Course. Upon completing basic parachute training at the U.S Army Airborne School and Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape training, Ortiz was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion as a reconnaissance platoon commander. He later attended the Urban Reconnaissance and Surveillance Course and was then deployed with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit as the amphibious reconnaissance platoon commander. After attending a Close Quarters Tactics Course, Ortiz became the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit's force reconnaissance platoon commander.

With numerous commendations, he left the United States Marine Corps after eight years of distinguished service and then applied to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After completing the application and hiring process, Ortiz went on to attend the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Upon graduating from the Academy, he was sworn in as a Special Agent and assigned to the New York Field Office as a member of a counterterrorism squad. Two years into his career with the FBI, Ortiz attended the Hostage Rescue Team selection course. After successfully completing the New Operators Training School, he joined the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team as an assaulter.

Eventually, Ortiz's exemplary work as an HRT operator caught the attention of Brian Hastings, the Special Agent in Charge of the newly reformed New York Domestic Unit of the Counter Terrorist Unit. Hastings contacted him and made an offer of employment with CTU. The Counter Terrorist Unit is a U.S. government agency set up to relieve other American federal agencies of their scattered counter-terrorist programs by consolidating the U.S. civilian anti-terrorist effort into one organization. Although loosely affiliated with the Central Intelligence Agency, CTU is an independent agency. Therefore, unlike the CIA, its operational jurisdiction is both foreign and domestic.

Ortiz accepted the job offer and joined the New York Domestic Unit as the Director of Field Operations. At some point, he began a relationship with a fellow CTU co-worker, senior data analyst, Dana Walsh. They later became engaged.
