Earth is the third planet in the Sol star system, the only known planet where life formed, and the origin of humanity. Earth's human population grew exponentially from the early Holocene to the late Holocene until population strains on Earth's resources, the added population due to the "Longevity Treatment", and the advent of a cultural shift towards more responsible use of natural resources lead to a sharp decline in birth rates. By the late Holocene the population of Earth was holding steady at 13 billion. However, most believed Earth's population was already far too high so millions of people were being sent to Mars and other locations to start new colonies. For a long time this colonization effort was not so much an effective means of diminishing Earth's population so much as it was a cultural pressure release valve. Earth's population was pacified simply by knowing that something was being done.
