Harley Quinn is a major antagonist in Batman: Shadow War. She is Joker's self-proclaimed girlfriend and henchgirl as well as ultimately his right hand.

History[]

Background[]

During her early life, Harleen Quinzel had a criminal father who gave her distorted morals, but also led her to become fascinated by the extreme criminal mind. Being academically intelligent, she therefore undertook a psychiatric medical degree at Gotham University as this was the quickest method of being able to treat criminal behavior in institutions such as Arkham Asylum. While at the university, Harleen also developed her skills in gymnastics.

Transformation[]

To become a fully qualified psychiatrist, Harleen trained under Dr. Penelope Young at Arkham and had an appointment with Alberto Falcone and serial killer Julian Gregory Day AKA Calendar Man. Eventually Joker was once again arrested for an attempted murder on Mayor Marion Grange and sent to Arkham Asylum, Harleen was interested in such a criminal mind and gained authorization to have an appointment with him. Joker managed to manipulate and gain her sympathy while telling stories on an abusive relationship with his father, how he became himself and saying his crimes are mean't to be jokes, even sharing some.

Harleen became in love with the Joker madly and helped him break out, committing crimes together. She became Harley Quinn and attempted to kill an entire crowd trying to expose Harleen for who she is however Batman and Robin intervened. They fought however Joker escaped and armed an explosive to kill them all despite Harley being visibly saddened, however she fell back in love and remained loyal to the evil clown after the cop escorting her sat on a whoopie cushion reading "Keep Smiling, Harl. Love, Mr. J" from Joker, causing her to break into laughter and she was sentenced to Arkham Asylum.

Other Crimes[]

Harley Quinn continued to assist Joker in his crimes across Gotham City as well as breaking him out of Arkham Asylum. Once, she teamed up with Poison Ivy on her "girl's night out" and took an injection which made her immune to diseases, bacteria and poisons like Ivy, but Joker escaped Arkham to retake Harley and attempted to kill Ivy however Batman and Robin intervene with the three criminals being recaptured and sent back to Arkham Asylum.

Personality[]

Harley Quinn gained strong interest in criminology as her father was a criminal and as a psychiatrist, she was very responsible, caring and strongly empathized with her patients. Despite this, Harley had distorted morals and lacked a great deal of common sense. In her sessions with the Joker, she had failed to see sense and overestimated her abilities as he was extremely crafty, which mean't that he could easily influence her to feel sympathy and affection for him.

Psychological Profile[]

Transference is a professional danger that every psychiatrist must be ready for, but Dr. Harleen Quinzel experienced what might be classified as delusional transference when she convinced herself that she and the Joker were in love. Displaying symptoms of bipolar disorder, with the Joker's mood swings as the causative agent for her maniac and depressive episodes, Quinzel also shows a high level of dependence on the Joker. His mistreatment of her gives this dependence a dimension of sadomasochism.

Additional notes: She shows signs of extreme regression in the Joker's presence. The exessive and invavise psychological screening I had to undergo here at Arkham was largely due to her earlier fall from grace. At times I'm resentful of this; the mere idea I would become inappropriately involved with the Joker or any other inmate is preposterous.
