A highland dylanus (Dylanus nevadaii) is an extinct Pleistocene species of dylanuses known from fragmentary remains discovered in the highlands across California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada. The cave paintings in these areas shows depictions of dylanuses resembling a furry version of an American common dylanus, but was a completely different species entirely as DNA samples from highland dylanus remains confirms. The highland dylanuses were most likely very omnivorous and may have competed for food from the adaptable American common dylanuses, in a manner similar to early humans of Pliocene and early Pleistocene Africa, except without violent attacks or defense since highland dylanuses were likely peaceful like American common dylanuses. The American common dylanuses may have drove highland dylanuses to extinction.
