Hot Wheels 2010 Season is the first in the line of "Hot Wheels Season" games. Released once each year, Hot Wheels Season games combine arcade-style racing with realistic and action-packed Hot Wheels tracks, acording to 984, "taking a new direction for the ill-fated HW games".

Gameplay Edit

Gameplay is similar to ModNation Racers: there are six basic powerups (Missile, Landmine, Shield, Shock Blast, Laser, and Nitrous). Each of the powerups upgrades four times by running through other item boxes while you have a powerup (for example, the Missile becomes homing, then triple homing, then a storm of missiles firing front and back through the car). This will be further explained in the Powerups Section. All in-game cars have full damage modeling, but there is also a singular "Damage Bar": damage to both the frame and mechanical workings of the car will accumulate. When the Damage Bar is filled (quite quickly, too), the car will be destroyed, and will respawn two seconds ahead of its destruction point. Most cars are unlocked by XP earned from races.

Powerups Edit

Missile - Fires a missile at the target. It is unguided, but can bounce off of walls.

Homing Missile - Fires a guided missile at the target. The missile can be shaken off, and XP will be rewarded for doing so.
Triple Homing Missile - Fires a guided missile at the target. This is like the Homing Missile but can be used three times in a row.
Superweapon: SCUD Storm - Fires several guided missiles away from the front and back of the car.

Landmine - Drops a mine which causes slight damage to cars.

Anti-Tank Landmine - Drops a mine which can fell most damaged cars.
Triple AT Landmine - Drops three landmines which can make a dangerous minefield at choke points.
Superweapon: Magnetic Mine - Drops a single mine. Once ran over, the mine sticks to the car and activates a ten second detonation timer: magnets speed the car up. The only way to get rid of the Mag Mine is to smack into another car. When the Mag Mine detonates, it destroys any car, regardless of damage status, instantly.

Shield - Automatically uses itself on powerup impact to stop damage (but not push).

Power Shield - Can be used for five seconds to guard against powerups.
Reflection Shield - When a Missile/Shock Blast/Laser hits the Deflector Shield, it will reflect back at the shooter before it deactivates.
Superweapon: Deflector Shield - Lasts for ten seconds. If a powerup hits it, at the end of the ten seconds an EMP is released which sends every car around the blast point flying.

Shock Blast - Fires a single electric blast at targets. They are slowed down but not pushed if it hits.

Triple Shock Blast - Fires three shock blasts at targets.
Gargantuan Shock Blast - Fires a large homing shock blast at targets.
Superweapon: EMP Blast - Fires a pink EMP around targets, which slows them down heavily.

Laser - Fires a single thin laser beam from the car.

Triple Laser - Fires three thin lasers on a spread
Large Laser - Fires a large laser blast.
Superweapon: Ion Cannon - Fires a large blue laser blast. It has the power to destroy cars instantly.

Nitro - Gives the car a small speed boost.

Nitro Shot - Gives the car a mid-sized speed boost.
Nitroglycerin Detonation - Gives the car a large speed boost
Superweapon: Hyperdrive - Accelerates the car to maximum speed instantly.

Did You Know Facts Edit

...that the Sting Ray concept in the Starter Vehicles lineup was two Transformers toys?

...that the Tyrrell P34 is the only six-wheeled Formula 1 car?

...that the Volkswagen Golf GTI is Canadian Car of the Year?

...that the Mazda Furai is a concept car?

...that the Mad Propz and Propper Chopper are the only aircraft in-game (and that they fly at low levels)?

...that the name "Paradigm Shift" also stands for one of Final Fantasy XIII's game features?

Reviews Edit

Reviews have praised the game. IGN stated that "Although the game's Segment Series are sometimes unoriginal and the Race World races basically rip off of Burnout: Legends, not to mention that several vehicles are redundant, the sheer thrill of being able to drive a Daytona coupe against a Lamborghini - and thanks to the magic of reworked powerups - win, is what sends adrenaline rushing through our bodies. That, and the fact that when Speed Machines comes out, some cars are transferable. HW Season 2010 looks like a great start to the yearly Hot Wheels Season series. The only piece of forward thinking is how 984 Studios can top this in the next Season...".

The game has averaged 4 and 5/5 (which means 8 to 10/10, 90 to 100/100, and such), which means that in 984's own words, "Despite several setbacks, the Season series has gotten off to a great start. And trust me, Speed Machines will be out before the end of 2010, but not now, so that you can build your car collections when the time comes."
