Karen Sisco is a fictional Deputy United States Marshal created by novelist Elmore Leonard.
Karen was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She grew up in law enforcement, as her father was a Miami police officer. He had hoped Karen would steer clear of a dangerous career and settle down with someone safe, like a doctor or a lawyer. But she always knew she was destined to follow in her father's law enforcement footsteps.
After graduating from high school, Karen enlisted in the United States Army. Inspired by her father's career, she decided to become a military police soldier. After completing basic combat training and then advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, Karen attended the U.S. Army Airborne School. Upon completing airborne training, she was assigned to the 503rd Military Police Battalion at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
Karen left the U.S. Army after four years of service and went on to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Soon after, her father left the Miami-Dade Police Department and set up his own private investigation firm in Coral Gables. While still attending college classes, Karen worked surveillance jobs for her father and eventually decided she would like federal law enforcement. Upon graduating from Florida Atlantic with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice, she applied to join the United States Marshals Service.
Before she could become a U.S. Marshal, Karen had to go through the Marshals Service's application and hiring process, which included a physical fitness test, a background investigation, and a medical examination. After her successful completion of the hiring process, she went on to attend the U.S. Marshals Service Training Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. Upon completion of training, Karen was assigned as a Deputy U.S. Marshal to the Miami office in the Southern District of Florida. She later transferred to the West Palm Beach office.
In her capacity as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, Karen is tasked with apprehending wanted fugitives, transporting federal prisoners, and protecting endangered federal witnesses. She is also involved in protecting federal judicial officials such as judges, prosecutors, and even jurors.
As she pursues dangerous fugitives from the law, Karen must navigate her way from the dark underbelly of South Beach nightlife to the sunshine and glitz of Palm Beach highlife, all while struggling to win the respect of her fellow law enforcement officers.
Karen is the busiest investigator, and despite being busy she find out all the time to have fun and frolic in the city and amongst her friends and family. Whenever she finds herself looping in trouble, she calls for the help from her father. He's her confidant, counselor, confessor and her rock when her confidence wavers which it does every time she tries to connect romantically with a man. The elder Sisco knows that his daughter faces the daunting task of living up to his reputation and, equally challenging, separating her dangerous career from her precarious love life. Many-a-times, her father has helped her in solving the fugitive mysteries. In critical cases when her confidence waves, he's there to offer support and do all that he can do.
Seasoned Federal Marshal Amos Andrews is Karen's boss. He, too, looks out for Karen and, unlike most of her predominantly male colleagues, Andrews is not afraid to throw a challenge her way.
Every time she encounters a burglary or any fugitive out there in the beach, one finds her intellect coming into action more than her pistol. She's one such investigator who loves to play safe at all costs, and get the criminal caught in her own unique subtle way. Karen's mission is to get the criminals and fugitives off the Miami Beach, and for this purpose she does every small and big thing into action. She's of the sort who will never like to play bo-peep with her profession.
As an investigator, Karen is an active professional whose eyes seem calculative and her mind is doing all the intuitive reasoning of its own. She's confident and not over confident investigator, who makes marvelous use of her intellect and other qualities to get the crime finished. She has the art of exhuming truth from the fugitives, brains and the brawns, and this further makes her an amazing investigator altogether.
