It concerns the story of four 16 year old boys running off from the fictional Iowa Apartment Block of Rhubarb after they pay witness to the killing of a Rhubarb patron at the hands of a mentor of theirs whom implicates them in the murder.

The movie oversees the tragic story of the powerful friendship between four boys on the run across the American States with each other and their ultimate fates.

Plot[]

Three sixteen year old boys: Harley Sherlins, Collins Bennett and Adam Mattheson along with Harley's younger brother Carlos live in the fictional large Rhubarb Apartment Block in Grundy, Iowa during the 1960's.

The boys are all absent of fathers and are all in the custody of an adoptive Auxillary Woman named Bette Nickleriver.

Their story is told by an adult man whom appears at the beginning at the Rhubarb Apartment Block to greet a new young patron woman named Hannah Gooden.

He tells the woman Hannah the room she is renting out whilest living out contemporarily in Grundy, Iowa once belonged to a woman he knew who was the adoptive mother to four boys during the 1960's.

The tale continues on as the four boys on the day of September 21st, 1964 have their lives changed forever as local patron and cocaine abuser Nestleborough Roberts murders fellow patron Diedrich Sanders and throws the murder weapon gun to friend circle leader Harley Sherlins implicating in the murder of the individual.

The boys leave a note for their surrogate mother Bette Nickleriver proclaiming their innocence and that they are running away and most likely not return.

The four boys evade the pursuing authorities to make their way to Keokuk where the true killer is and prove they are innocent in the killing of a man.

The boys transgress across Texas, The Nevada Desert and finally back to the Iowa crossings of Greene to Guthrie to make to Keokuk to the true killer and have him caught as the authorities close in.

The true killer is exposed in the murder and they are exonerated but not before a shot is fired off at Collins to which Harley steps in the way of.

Harley is rendered into acoma and remains so for the remainding years leading up to 2012.

The story ends and the patron woman Hannah seems utterly intrigued by the story and has a bevy of questions for the man telling her.

The man answers her questions as she asks what became of Bette Nickleriver to which he answers she was reunited with her boys once again but in the means of catching the first flight to Keokuk and heading over to Mercy General Hospital to visit the acomatose Harley and other remaining three boys.

The boys remained visiting her and living under her care until she died at age 65 from a heart attack.

The boys by the age moved out and supported themselves under the educations at three different colleges leading onto three very different careers.

Hannah enquires to what became of Harley and the man tells he is not sure as following him becoming a hotshot architect along with the other two becoming an artist and plane pilot he couldn't find it within himself to return to Mercy General which lead to Carlos and Adam wanting nothing to do with him.

Hannah then becomes shocked and the man then states "Oh, Yes by the way i'm Collins Bennett and the story you've been told over the course of an hour of and half is mine."

The film ends with Hannah following him all the way out of the apartment building to his car and forcing her way into his car.

She tells how she had never knew her father either as he abandoned her with her mother when she was born leaving her to be raised by her until she took her life when she exactly 12 years old.

She tells what she has just heard sounds exactly like the problems which she has never been able to resolve her entire life apart from the having three amazing friends to grow up and back her up through them.

She convinces the adult Collins to be taken to Adam Mattheson and Carlos Sherlins and take them to Mercy General Hospital.

She also asks to accompany him to them and the hospital to see the friend who took a bullet for him herself.

Hannah and Collins first round up Adam whom serves as a pilot stationed centrally in Austin, Texas.

They find Carlos in Greene, Iowa where he resides as a father of three and loving husband as well as family man artist.

His wife however is suffering from depression from suffering from the miscarriage of a fourth child.

He has been attached to his brother and mostly visits him every weekend he is givent he chance to.

Hannah leaves a book with his wife before leaving.

He at first engages in a fight with Collins regarding the reason he has come and is reconciled mainly by Hannah whom breaks them apart along with Adam.

Carlos informs Hannah and Collins there is no more Harley that he passed away two years ago.

They all visit his grave following and following that Hannah shares a passionate kiss with Collins as they come back to the Rhubarb Apartments.

That night that Collins spends with Hannah she passes away in her sleep as it turns out she possessed three anorisms connected to the three main ventricles of her brain.

Her death reveals why she had stated before being told the story of Collins and the three best friends and the murder that she would only be living at the Rhubarb contemporarily.

Distraught over her death and the guilt of Harley's death Collins travels to the Grundy Cemetary and attempts via gun to kill himself over Harley's grave symbolizing how Harley had once taken a bullet for him which ultimatley killed him.

His brother Carlos and his depressive wife however show up and prevent him and render him partially unconsious.

As they load the hallucinating partially unconsious Collins into the backseat of their car Carlos' wife is seen holding the book left to her by Hannah.

The book is open and on the inside cover reads: "Runaway Rhubarbs."

A flashback is then show of Hannah listening at her Rhubarb apartment to Collins telling of childhood and as she is jotting down everything he says in an empty book of hers.

As Carlos reaches over and holds her hand with her smiling a flashback shows Hannah speaking to her with handing the book telling her it will bring happiness in the form of selflessness.

The closing scene is that of Collins laying down in the backseat looking at Carlos.

Instead of seeing Carlos however he is seeing Harley whom looks back at him in his child form and smiles.
