Shadow Voyage is a Swedish Melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, formed in 1991 as a death metal band. The band have stated they are the same scene as pioneers of the melodeath genre In Flames, Dark Tranquility and At The Gates.
On August 16th 2010 it was announced that both Erik and Niklas Sturgens, and Martin Vargeld had been fired from the band after the remaining band members, who had only been in the band for three years, fired Erik and brought in new singer Johan Rekse. Both Niklas and Martin left, deeply angry with the band. Lawsuits are underway for the use of the Shadow Voyage name. Erik, Niklas and Martin have claimed the rights of the Shadow Voyage name, along with all their albums and the allowing to play their songs live, while Johan Rekse, Peter Kardensi and Richard Gregsen have taken the name Voyage of the Shade and the rights over the latest recordings. Erik Sturgens commented at a press conference: "This whole thing could have been totally avoidable, and shouldn't have happened. Some guys and another singer we'd never even met stole our band, but we've managed to take it back from them.
The Shadow Voyage name is under the rights of the Sturgens and Martin Vargeld, and they have re-entered the band while the others have left to form Voyage of the Shade along with the new material, which according to Niklas Sturgens is: "Fucking piracy of our own music, that Johan Rekse fuck never even sang on the record, they should not be allowed to have the rights. Those recordings were 98% Erik, Martin and I. We are just glad to have the Shadow Voyage name and our other works still with us".
Early days Edit
From 1988-1990 Erik Sturgens and his brother Niklas played in a death metal band Necromicon with Martin Vargeld and Laureg Viksen. When Necromicon fell apart in 1990 after one demo, 1989's Death Demo '89, Erik persisted with the others to continue with a new band. Vargeld and Viksen agreed, but Niklas decided to take a break from music for a while. Erik's new band recruited Tyven Wodnottsol on drums and started Shadow Voyage, a new death metal project.
A Night of Daggers and departure from death metal sound Edit
Shadow Voyage recorded a demo in 1991 and sent it off to Brutal Theatre Records, who instantly signed them. The band released their first album, A Night of Daggers, on December 13th 1991. After discussing the future of the band, Erik Sturgens had made the decision to change direction in terms of sound for the band, something Laureg Viksen did not favour. He confronted the band, saying that they should stick to their death metal origins, but Erik and Martin Vargeld, the main forerunners of the band thought otherwise, and Viksen left apruptly.
The Creator and the Seer and departure of Tyven Wodnottsol Edit
Although Shadow Voyage approached Brutal Theatre Records about a change of sound, the record label still decided to remain ties with the band, and producer Kristef Uven and the band entered the studio in 1992. Among them was latest addition, Johannes Idvesten on bass, who replaced Laureg Viksen after his departure from the band. The band released The Creator and the Seer on May 15th 1993, and toured in support. However tensions in the band returned, and drummer yven Wodnottsol departed stating he lacked interest in the band's new sound.
