In May 2011, Spider-Man 4 successful $265 million opening weekend, Sony announced the start of a new Spider-Man trilogy, beginning with Spider-Man 4 and that there would two movies informally titled Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6, respectively.

In 2014, Sony announced that Raimi would return to direct the fifth film of the franchise. James Vanderbilt was hired to write the script for the fourth film. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal will be producers.

In February 2015, Tobey Maguire and Emmy Rossum will return as Peter Parker and Liz Allan for the fifth film.

In September 2015, it was announced by that Aaron Eckhart had been cast as Roderick Kingsley/Hobgoblin.

In November 2015, Rebecca Hall was confirmed to return as Valeria Toomes in the fifth film.

In January 2016, Jessica Biel was cast to replace Rossum in the role of Liz Allan.

In March 2016, Kate Beckinsale would casting reprise his role as Silver Sablinova / Silver Sable in Spider-Man 5.

In May 2016, the studio pushed back the film from November 20, 2015, to September 15, 2017.

In January 2017, the studio pushed back the release date to November 16, 2018.
