The WT-X1 is a fictitious retrofuturistic handheld device. It is billed by the manufacturer as being the quote-unquote "walkie-talkie of the future" for use by anyone.
It is the primary and mainstay handheld communications device that is used by the Khyron Mercenaries.
Details[]
The WT-X1 is a handheld walkie-talkie that was developed sometime in the 1980s to have a series of advanced features to give it a technological edge over other walkie-talkies. It features a computerized interface system with a universal port, a holographic micro-projector eye for visual displaying of information, and a MicroCartridge drive for its removable storage medium.
In its primary function as a walkie-talkie, the WT-X1 can accommodate quite literally every modulation scheme that there is for walkie-talkies. It also features a TNC for supporting packet radio data transmission, all without the need for additional hardware. It also features GPS on it, a feature that compliments the micro-projector well.
MicroCartridge[]
The MicroCartridge is the WT-X1's proprietary removable storage media format. It somewhat resembles a cross between an iOmega Jaz or Rev hard drive cartridge and a 16mm microfilm cartridge. The MicroCartridge is approximately 1.5 inches thick, and 2 inches in diameter in size.
It has three miniature hard disk-type platters placed on a motorized spindle and read/write head in a protective casing. The drive works the spindle and read/write head in the MicroCartridge for reading and writing data as the platters were spun.
Variants[]
- WT-X1c - Compact model without an on-board MicroCartridge drive, so in order to use MicroCartridges, a separate module with a drive would need to be installed on it.
- WT-X1bh - A variant of the WT-X1 that is developed for operators with larger hands. bh = big hands.
- WT-X1ep - A model of the WT-X1 with modifications to the design to protect it from EMPs.
- WT-X1wrk - An industrial-use version of the WT-X1.
- WT-X1.5 - A transitional model towards the second generation WT-X2.
- WT-X1csm - A consumer-grade model of the WT-X1 intended for use by civilians.
Trivia[]
- The WT-X1 is inspired by the iDroid from the Metal Gear franchise.
